The 1980's was an important decade for the BB as 1983 was the World Wide Centenary of the Movement. NZ, the first country to celebrate this special year held an International Camp, called BB100, at Mystery Creek, Hamilton (30 Dec 1982-8 Jan 1983).
Twenty young men received their QB during the decade - the highest number in our Company history. In 1980 the Comany presented 5 Queen's Awards - Darryle Gay, Andrew MacKenzie, Craig Poole, Richard Roxburgh - the highest number ever awarded in one year. The Company has presented 1 Kings and 56 Queens Awards.
During the decade Company members climbed their first 10,000ft mountain in the Mt Cook National Park (Nov 1982). But that's another story.
Photo 1: Our local Battalion operated numerous events. The Centennial Games held at QEII park was one of these events. Michael DeAth, Kerry Hammond and Grant Shepherd talked an unsuspecting junior to ride inside the tube for this relay.
Photo 2: Rock Climbing on Castle Rock was always a popular event for the Company. In 1983 we decided to camp the night on Castle Rock.
